Title: Migrating to 11g
Post by Pete Finnigan on Nov 15th, 2007, 1:44pm
Hey guys, We are on Oracle 9i and not sure if we will migrate to Oracle 11g.  I am wondering, if any of you folks have upgraded to Oracle 11G and if so why, or if you are still in the previous version, why so.  Also, wondering, if I am on Oracle 9i - how much incremental budget will i need to get approval for, if we migrate to Oracle 11g - assuming all other things being equal.

I saw an item on the Dizwell blog (http://www.dizwell.com/prod/node/881) about what Oracle's first version of an Oracle database release was that was considered "stable". (The item is called "Headless chickens", don't take it personally :))

Oracle 8i    - release 3
Oracle 9i    - release 2
Oracle 10g - release 2

Oracle 11g was released this summer, so it is pretty new. As things usually go with new releases of the Oracle database (or indeed most business software in the Western world), it still has major bugs.

I would advise to wait until 11g Release 2 is out. That still might take a while. In the meantime, I would migrate to 10.2.0.3. It's pretty stable.
