Title: Need to make copy of old data and save for audit
Post by Pete Finnigan on May 13th, 2009, 10:16pm
We have an old oracle 8.1.7 DB.  The application was home grown but the data needs to be kept from a certian group of tables.  It has been suggested that I copy the information from the old database into a new tablespace in the new db and make it read only another suggestion was to pull out the data and put it into Access.  The trick is it has to be kept in a readonly format and it's only a chunk of the data in each of the requested tables.  I've never done either and am not sure what the best route is.  Any suggestions or ideas about how to achieve this would be greatly appreciated.  I need to get it completed ASAP, thanks in advance.

Hi,

There is really no such thing as read-only in Oracle - there is always ways that you can come up with to read the data. Oracle 10g brought in read-only tablespaces so you could use those. I wrote some blog entries on read-only users and data a long time ago. Have a look at http://www.petefinnigan.com/weblog/archives/00001174.htm and http://www.petefinnigan.com/weblog/archives/00000033.htm. You can also search in google for "read only site:www.petefinnigan.com" - http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=read+only+site%3Awww.petefinnigan.com&aq=f&oq=&aqi= as i have written on the subject of read only a few times.

hth

cheers

Pete
